The US Army MARS Program has operated continuously in Michigan since 1948. Current membership consists of approximately 90 trained and licensed radio operators. These men and women are from all walks of life, are dedicated to the MARS mission and give freely of their time and resources as an expression of their service to country and community.
Their stations are located throughout the state ranging from the Upper Peninsula to the Indiana border, and from Benton Harbor to Port Huron. If you are a resident of Michigan, it is likely that a MARS member is located near you. See a LIST of cities within the state having one or more MARS members.
Using computers,
High Frequency and Very High Frequency radios, our members handle large volumes
of message traffic each year. The bulk of this traffic is related to emergency
communication training and administration. But a significant portion also
consists of Morale and Welfare traffic (MARSGRAM's) which are personal radiogram
messages sent by families and friends to military personnel located within the
United States or overseas. Replies are also handled.
See information on how to send a free
MARSGRAM.
Members participate in voice or digital mode networks several times a day depending on their personal schedule. Numerous national emergency training exercises simulating a variety of disaster scenarios are conducted every year as part of an intensive ongoing training program. These exercises provide an opportunity to interface with a number of federal agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and National Disaster Medical Service (NDMS), to name a few.
On a daily basis, Michigan Army MARS stations also interact with members of the Michigan Navy-Marine Corps MARS program providing mutual support in areas such as message traffic handling and emergency exercise coordination. Interfaces also exist with the US Army MARS Headquarters at Fort Huachuca, AZ, the Michigan National Guard, US Army Reserve units within the state, as well as numerous county-level branches of the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES).
There is always room for another team member in the Michigan Army MARS program! View more information on the subject of MEMBERSHIP.
